Grundrisse

$16980, Amherst, MA info@activersity.org

This camper is 24 square meters (226 sqft, which is the size of a Japanese studio apartment). It sleeps five comfortably, but potentially eight. It can stay off-grid for about five days. A plethora of electrical outlets makes it usable as a home office.

Kitchen

The kitchen has a double sink, microwave oven, gas/electric refrigerator, and gas stove/oven. The microwave oven requires shore-power, while the refrigerator, stove/oven, and hot water are gas-operated. The exhaust fan is operated by the camper’s battery. There is a pantry and two overhead storage compartments.

Dinette

The dinette is 2×1 meters. It is in a slide-out which must be extended in order for the camper to be used practically. The slide-out is extended by an onboard electric motor. The dinette couch contains two large drawers plus a supply chest that contains, among other things, the ladder to the bunk bed. Above, there are three cabinets. The table lowers to provide the base for an auxiliary bed.

Bedroom

The bedroom contains a queen-size bed. Under the bed are two storage chests. On either side of the bed are two closets with clothes hangers. Underneath each closet are two drawers. Overhead are four storage compartments. There are two sliding doors on either side of the entertainment center which close to provide privacy to the bedroom. Two speakers from the entertainment system are located on the ceiling of the bedroom.

Bunk Beds

The bunk beds are nearly 130 cm wide. For comparison, A single bed is 90 cm wide and a queen is 152 cm wide.

Water Closet

There is a sink with hot/cold water, a medicine cabinet, storage under the sink, a skylight, and a roof vent with fan.

There is a flush toilet connected to a 113 liter tank. That provides for about a two-week service window, although weekly dumping is recommended.

The shower is connected to a 22 liter gas-powered water heater. Mixed with cold water, this is easily a 40 liter shower. (A ten minute shower at home requires 80 liters.) However, by using the stop button on the showerhead, usage can drop to under 10 liters.

Entertainment Center

The entertainment center has a wide-screen TV and bluetooth speakers. There is an exterior connector for cable TV service. The TV requires shore power, while the speakers can use the camper battery.

Heating/cooling

There is an air conditioner on the roof. It must be connected to shore-power in order to work. Heating is achieved via a gas furnace that pumps warm air through ducts that have vents in the bedroom, kitchen and water closet.

Lighting

Lighting is by LED lamps in the ceiling. These can be operated individually or by a master switch.

Water

There is a 174 liter fresh water tank and there is a connector for a garden hose. These two are not connected to each other, but are connected to the fresh water system. The camper operates with either. There is a grey water tank for sink and shower water and a black water tank which is connected to the toilet. These can be either connected to a campground sewer or emptied by using a waster water tote (included).

Exterior Services

On the starboard side is an extendable outdoor kitchen with gas-grill, sink with hot/cold water, and refrigerator. The minifridge that is standard with this camper model has been replaced with a battery-powered freezer-fridge chest because the minifridge could only be used with shore-power.

Also on the starboard side are external speakers and an electrically operated awning.

On the port side is an outdoor shower with hot/cold water. On the back is a bike rack and a permanent ladder to the roof. In the nose of the vehicle is a pass-through storage compartment.

There is a rearward-facing video camera and a monitor that goes in the towing vehicle. The camera is activated when the camper power is connected to the towing vehicle.

Off-Grid

The rate-limiting factor is water usage. A single person uses about 30 liters of water per day, including showers, so the fresh water tank provides five days of autonomy. There are two 12V car batteries, each of which can power the camper three days if used economically, else one battery provides one day of service. The black-water and grey-water tanks are meant to be emptied in campground sewer systems, but a rolling waste-water tank that is housed in the aft compartment than can be used to take away waste water to be dumped in a toilet.

There are two BBQ gas canisters with dual-connectors. When one canister is exhausted, the second automatically becomes available.

Gas is used for the refrigerator when off-grid, the hot water heater, and the central heating. One canister last about a month, but in extreme hot/cold weather, about two weeks.
