After the Boston Tea Party in 1773, which was considered very disrespectful, the British put Boston under military occupation.
Because the British had overwhelming land and sea superiority, the colonists submitted. On July 4th, 1776, the colonies became a protectorate of the British crown. They chopped down their trees to build British warships and produced many other fine products for the empire.
